Lovely thread title!

Reminds of the stale theatres and their badly dubbed ads back home :D

A bad trailer, a hot actress and a decent actor.

Woh Lamhe (http://www.indiafm.com/features/2006/07/27/1391/index.html)

Quote
Woh Lamhe

The much talked about film on the alleged real life equation between Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi finally makes its presence felt through its first trailer. And the first aspect that attracts you about the trailer is the soothing and melodious track 'Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai' that plays in the background. Bhatts have always had a smart sense of music in their films and this one too sounds promising. KK crooning the 'Oooou' way reminds you of 'Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai' from Gangster but nevertheless he does an excellent job.

And while the soft number appeals to your ears, your eyes cannot afford to miss the gorgeous Kangana Ranaut who plays an actress in the film (the character based on Parveen Babi). Waving off to her fans, enjoying media attention and posing for some exquisite photo-shoots, Kangana as Sana Azim looks absolutely ravishing.

Shiny Ahuja plays filmmaker Aditya Garewal (the character based on Mahesh Bhatt) directing Kangana for shots. Despite the stories of their off-screen tiffs, the couple shares a sizzling onscreen chemistry. The duo promenading around a fountain or Kangana in a bathtub full of rose petals add to the rich visuals.

The trailer subsequently shifts towards a serious note with Kangana venting out her frustration, hospital scenes and tears flowing. The movie supposedly has a tragic end. The promo ends on some intense close up shots of the forlorn duo.

Woh Lamhe means those moments. The film talks about…
Moments of fame
Moments of love
Moments of pain
Moments make a lifetime
For everyone who has loved and lost…

What is 'Woh Lamhe' about?

In the glitzy entertainment capital of Mumbai as dusk descends, famous actress Sana Azim (Kangana Ranaut) slashes her wrists in a hotel room, in an attempt to kill herself. When this news reaches film maker Aditya Garewal (Shiny Ahuja), he is devastated. Aditya has been searching for Sana all over the world. Sana who was intensely involved with Aditya, had mysteriously disappeared from his life without any explanation, three years ago, only to surface now in what could be the last moments of her life.

As Aditya waits outside the ICU in a death watch situation, praying to be reunited with her, he is hurled back into the perfumed days and champagne nights of his memory, wherein Sana Azim played the role of both, lover and mentor to a struggling Aditya.

Everything was perfect, except for an enemy which lurked in the shadow, waiting to destroy their love. An enemy which neither of them saw till it was too late…

When Aditya realizes that the only way he can save Sana from total devastation is to take her away from Bollywood and the vested interests that threaten to destroy her completely, he runs away with Sana putting his career on the line. Those moment lived in the sanctuary of their love are like an oasis in the desert.

Until one day, suddenly, she disappears, leaving him with unanswered question. Why did she leave at the very acme of their love, when there seemed to be hope? What pushed her to attempt suicide? Will be finally be able to piece together the puzzle that has been haunting him and almost destroyed him? And most important of all, will be reunited with his love?

Nope it is Mohit Suri, the guy who did Zeher and Kalyug. I honestly have not bothered to watch any of the movies that have come out from the Mahesh Bhatt camp including Murder. But I think I will attempt to watch Gangster after hearing only good things about it.

But I think I will attempt to watch Gangster after hearing only good things about it.

My review, written on 21st May '06:

Best of the year so far? Yes - easily. It has a few issues, so let me get them out of the way first:

Gangster has some shoddy acting by it's main character, the girl at the crux of a Love Triangle. She has a bad accent, and a stunted way of speech. Her arms are around one Emraan Hashmi who does lip-lock. But with all your pre-concieved notions of him, he is not easy to dislike. And the pay-off for that is pretty nice. And as is usual for Bollywood movies, the movie does go through some unnecessary melodrama, but thankfully these are just three short ones.

What really is good about this movie is the writing. Director Anurag Basu has written the movie with a very clear idea about what he intended to depict. Yes, we have a gangster, we have foreign locales, and we have a "sexy pair", but the movie religiously sticks to its story-telling without once stopping to over-sell violence or sleaze. The whole narrative plays like a solo violinst playing through a single-long peice with its share of happy/sad portions and a few crescendos at the right times with some recurring themes. So much so that it is easy to be sucked into the whole flow and go along with where the director takes you.

Anurag Basu is good. His second movie (I thunk), but he clearly has his own language of cinema. From the shot-arrangements and camera angles to the score and songs, this man plays it like he cares for his movie, and not for the producer's coffer. He tells us the story mostly in flash-backs - but with decent inter-cuts to make it not entirely linear. The movie moves along a relaxed yet fast pace. It reminded me of cruising in a luxury car at 180Kmhr. You are speeding, but very comfortably.

The movie follows the story of one-girl (Bar dancer, yawn!) who a Gangster falls for, rebels against his gang, goes on the run, then puts her away safe and stays away to keep her safe. After holding-on for years she, in her loneliness, falls in love with another man - just when the gangster comes back. Clashes, loyalties, retribution, betrayel, vengeance.

Shiney Ahuja shines (sorry, couldn't resist) as the titular Gangster. His going from unspoken emotionless man to unspoken jilted lover to unspoken "karma-yogi" works very well mainly for his intensely mascuine persona. How good is he as an actor will take something against his type to prove. But he fits here perfect, and within the world of this movie, the man is like the writer's imagined.

Watch this movie if you can catch it sometime soon. It's worth atleast that much respect.

‘Goal’

Okay, we all know by now that John Abraham has been finalized to enact the role of a footballer in GOAL, directed by Vivek [CHOCOLATE] Agnihotri and produced by UTV.

The makers will be using the services of Andy Ansah, the football choreographer for most feature films and commercials made on the subject of football, including the celebrated Nike campaigns and the acclaimed European film of the same name. Andy has worked with the best football players in the world, both past and present, including Pele, Ronaldinho, Beckham…

Location scouting has also begun in right earnest and the crew has zeroed in on Spain and U.K. to shoot the game in world class stadiums.

Says Ronnie Screwvala of UTV, “We are working 24/7 to ensure that we do justice to this amazing concept.” As a matter of fact, John has always been a football freak and the passion for the game took him all the way to Germany this year to see the World Cup Finals.

Kareena and Aamir finalized for Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo
[/b]

Kareena is on a high these days. So giving a fine performance in Omkara, she has signed on for Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo. The film will be an adaptation of Ismat Chugtai’s book of the same name. The interesting part is that she will be paired together for the first time with Aamir Khan.

This will be Kareena’s second period film after Asoka. Kareena feels glad that she has got an opportunity to play such role at this phase of her career.

She has already started reading Chugtai’s period love story to understand her role and to get into the skin of the character. Previously she had worked with Mani Ratman for Yuva and is he is currently busy shooting for his forthcoming film Guru. Lajjo will go on floor in January and will be out in mid 2007.

Dunno about her acting capabilities - but she dfinitely looks the part. A kaamwali, I mean.

The film will be an adaptation of Ismat Chugtai’s book of the same name.

Ismat Chughtai?! Whoa! What co-incidences! (read on...)

For the past two-three years we have had Indian directors finally starting to adapt literal works. Apart from International texts, there is enough good literature in 20+ languages of Indian History to last these people a decade. From Sarat Chandra Chaterjee to Shakespeare, and now to someone more current: Ismat Cughtai. I am one happy man.

For those who would like to know: Ismat Chughtai was a fascinating Urdu writer from the 70s & 80s. She was the one to (most probably unknowingly) kick-start the feminist movement in India, ofcourse with Bangladesh's Wajeda Tabassum. Terdi Lakeer (Crooked Line) is one of her better books  - it's the only one my mom told me about, so I must confess I haven't heard of Lajjo. But expect it to be based in a middle-class Muslim family.

Co-inidence time : Interestingly, just a week back I asked my mom what "Lihaaf" meant (it's used in the supremely written "Bidi" Song of Omkara). She told me it was an Urdu word for a blanket/quilt. And then she told me about Ismat Chughtai's controversial book of the same title (Lihaaf) that dealt with lesbianism. For the book, Chughtai was charged with obscenity, but she was let go coz her lawyer proved in court that the book is not obscene (or leading), coz only those who are lesbians will understand it!

I had even confirmed that news from wikipedia  :P

Traffic Signal
[/b][/url]

Madhur Bhandarkar is back. And pretty soon this time! His tryst with realistic cinema continues with 'Traffic Signal' that talks about the lives of people staying in the slums of Mumbai and who operate around the city signals.

The trailer of 'Traffic Signal' opens amidst the honking of vehicles on a fast moving city street in Mumbai. Dabbawalas, sweepers, street show players, taxis, drug addicts, et al you get to see all the elements you will usually encounter on a signal in the city. Detailing always shows in the scripts of Bhandarkar's films.

As the movie name flashes, it introduces the lead characters of the film.
- Kunal Khemu as a slum dweller
- Neetu Chandra going in a complete deglam avatar for the film as a rag-picker
- Upendra Limaye as the drug peddler
- Konkana Sen Sharma playing a prostitute with that extra lipstick smeared on her face
- Ranvir Shorey as the pimp

The promo bears a brazen look throughout and as the executive producer's name flashes on the screen as 'Bhandarkar Entertainment' you know that Madhur Bhandarkar has also ventured into production with this film.

This Percept Picture Presentation faintly reminds of the 1981 classic film Chakra starring Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, directed by Rabindra Dharamraj that was the best film when it came to depicting lives of slum-dwellers. Even Sudhir Mishra's Dharavi had a similar setting. Incidentally Sudhir Mishra stars in Traffic Signal as a mafia don.

Firoz Nadiadwala announces Ramayana and Mahabharata
[/b]

After the success of Phir Hera Pheri, producer Firoz Nadiadwala has taken a big leap. His latest venture is the production of animated films based on the two great Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Nadiadwala informs that these will be India’s first 3D animated films. Interestingly, he has roped in the team which was responsible for creating outstanding animation and building strong story board of the famous Hollywood movie Madagascar, to work on these films. Also, talks are on to get J.Williams to do the background score for these films. Says Nadiadwala, “We are looking forward to completing these films in the next 17-18 months and if everything goes well, the films shall be released in 2008.”

Another factor that makes these projects a gigantic affair is that Firoz Nadiadwala is planning to give these films a worldwide release. “These two films will be dubbed in all major foreign languages and released internationally. Also, in India, these films will be dubbed in the regional languages and the voices to the characters will be given by the famous filmstars of that particular region.” says Nadiadwala. He adds that his team is very excited about these projects and they are in fact looking forward to see these films go to the Oscars as India’s official entry.

Apart from Ramayana and Mahabharata, Nadiadwala’s team is also working on creating the animated version of Hera Pheri and Phir Hera Pheri. The three characters, Raju, Shyam and Baburao who made the audiences laugh their heart out will now make a comeback in an animated form. This will be another interesting experiment to be done for the first time in Bollywood. Now, with so much of animation work happening at the Nadiadwala’s production house, it looks like there is an Indian Walt Disney in the making.

wow, i haven't seen this thread in a while.

1) esha kopikar as kaamwaali gangster? ROFLMAO! haven't we done the phoolan devi bit already?
shreq- were u referring to this or to umrao jaan when you said "it will suck"?
'cos i like the poster for umrao jaan. think the movie WILL suck though :P

2) madhur bandarkar failed to impress as much as i thought he would with "corporate". Definately better than average hindi cinema, but it's not mind blowing stuff. And considering he had actors like KK whom he could have made some amazing shit with.

3) animated 3d ramayan and mahabharat films? didn't we see some 2d versions of the ramayana recently? which dind't quite make it... somehow i don't think indian audiences click well with animation. just my thoughts tho - i'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Indian audience do like animation. That Hanuman movie did very well and I thot it was a pretty neatly animated. So if they do follow that footstep it should these could turn out pretty good.

Yes Corporate was average but I still enjoyed the movie coz it was something different than the normal Bollywood crap.

Jai Santoshi Maa (sadly I doubt this movie will be released here...)

"The remake season continues.

Ram Gopal Varma is remaking Sholay, David Dhawan will remake Amar Akbar Anthony, Farhan Akhtar is remaking Don...

Now, it's the turn of the 1975 hit Jai Santoshi Maa to be remade.

Jai Santoshi Maa was one of the biggest hits of its time, grossing about Rs 62 crores (Rs 620 million). It released around the same time as Ramesh Sippy's classic Sholay."

More interesting stuff:

They say that movies do have a severe impact on society at large. And there have been innumerable films which have proved this adage to be true. But none of them can even come close to the 1975 monumental hit, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. The film almost gave rise to a new Goddess, causing the greatest impact ever among the Indian masses.

It was a small budget mythological film, made essentially to cater to a specific target audience. 1975 was the year of action-packed movies like ‘Sholay’ and ‘Deewar’. The trend in Hindi cinema was slowly going through a metamorphosis. Sure there was a market for mythological movies — but that was way back in the 30s and 40s. During the time when ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ was released, this genre of movies was considered downmarket and as they say in typical movie terminology, B-grade.

That’s exactly why the unprecedented success of this movie shook the entire trade.

The story of the film revolved around Satyavati (Kanan Kaushal) who has complete devotion for Goddess Santoshi (Anita Guha). And that’s exactly what rankles the minds of those who envy this Goddess — particularly the wives of the three superpowers, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. After Satyavati gets married to Birju (Ashish Kumar), the envious trio harass her endlessly with loads of problems. Goddess Santoshi then comes to her rescue and guides her through the mess. In a rather melodramatic finale, the fury of Santoshi makes the other three Goddesses see sense and Satyavati is applauded for her undaunted devotion.

Until this film’s release, Goddess Santoshi was not a very well-known idol of worship. But this movie’s spectacular success made her a household name all over India. Housewives across the country began observing Fridays as the day of worship of Santoshi Maa.

The film had such a phenomenal effect on people’s minds that in most theatres where the film was being screened, audiences would remove their footwear outside the cinema halls, as a mark of respect to the Goddess.

Technically, the film was shoddily shot with special effects ranging from poor to average. But all that didn’t make any difference to the fate of the film.

The music by C. Arjun was highly popular, especially the song, "Main to aarti utaaru re, Santoshi mata ki". The number almost became like the nation’s new anthem and even today, it’s a must at all religious functions and ceremonies.

Director Vijay Sharma tried repeating his formula with a few more mythological films after this but none was even half as successful and impactful as ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’.

There have been many films before and after, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ which have stirred the mindset and psyche of the Indian audience. But none could match the overwhelming influence of ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’.

Anyone heard of this:
Quote
Sanaa – From dust to human dirt
[/b]

Aadesh Shrivastava's short-film wrenches your guts for various reasons. First of all it’s the first film to focus on the thorny and unbearable subject of child prostitution. It features the Black prodigy Ayesha Kapoor. Within a span of less than ten minutes little Ayesha takes us on a nerve-wracking journey that spins us into a dizzy web of guilt, accusation and regret for the lost childhood that we owe to all the Sanaa’s of this vicious and insensitive world.

Music-director turned filmmaker Aadesh Shrivastava packs in plenty of punch in his compact film. The abundance of talent helps to give the story an immediacy and credibility, as does the real locations where Sanaa moves within minutes from impoverished innocence to enforced and irredeemable corruption.

Pratima Kazmi puts in a cameo as Sanaa's mother and Seema Biswas chips in as 'Mausi' managing the monstrously perverse careers of the children. Akhilendra Mishra has the thankless role of the 'Seth' who seduces the 9-year old child. Someone has got to do the dirty work.

Admirably Aadesh Shrivastava has stuck his head into a dark and disturbing area of our lives. Ishwar Bidri's camera takes us through a complex geographical, emotional and sexual labyrinth, as we see Sanaa's innocence crushed to the ground.

A lot of attention is paid to intrinsic details. Manas Choudhary's sound design, replete with routine traffic noises in Mumbai and screams piercing through the mundane landscape, and Jayant Deshmukh's art direction lend an aura of agonizing aestheticism to this bitter film about the end of innocence.

Aptly, it ends with Shabana Azmi warning us of how many more Sanaas will be driven into the streets if we don't learn to take care of our children.

But are we really listening?

But are we really listening?

nope. Never heard of it. But reading the story outline just gve me Goose bumps.

The promo looks good and the star cast even better - Shilpa Shetty, Shiney Ahuja, Kay Kay Menon, Konkona Sen Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Sharman Joshi and the hot Kangana Ranaut.

Definitely one to watch out for.

That was titled Ta Ra Rum Pum Pum & was a college movie. Even Tanisha (lil Kajol) was supposed to debut in it. But that project, like a lot of Shekhar Kapoor's movies got stuck in Development Hell.

He still got the rights to the name, hence this movie with the missing Pum.

If you have seen Sudhir Mishra's excellent Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi then this movie will be definitely high on the must watch lists.

HKA was a movie about the Indian youth in the 60s and 70s during the naxal movements, drugs, government control, and most importantly love. This was easily one of the best movies to come out in 2003 but because of the low budget and less prominent actors it sank without a trace.

Rock On has a different look too - Can't access the website from here, but I think I can read and match the name Farhan Akhtar to the lead screaming guy. Is that Luke Kenny (the VJ) at the back?

Let's see how the music for both these movies turns out.

Why do I get a Kyon Ke vibes from watching the trailer Main and Mrs Khanna, beside the two leads. Is it wrong that I have a soft spot for Kyon Ke, which was unabashedly one of the sappiest tearjerker of recent years? Is it safe by now to write off Salman as a player in the Khan triangle? Yuvvraaj, despite having some good songs, was an awful film that I couldn't even bring myself to finish watching after the first 45 min.

Yeah good luck with that, lol. Anyway, I am pleased to know that you guys won't crucify me for liking it.

I guess so. But the thing is he is pulling a clunker after clunker and it is really hard to defend him. But then again he did Jaan-E-Mann which was great, and then worked in Love Actually's knockoff Salam-E-Ishq which was fun.

on a different topic, do you think his brother Sohail Khan is a better actor? I really don't like the dude unless he is doing a comedy role. His Salam-E-Ishq segment with Isha Koppikar was the funniest and best part of that film. Also his mischievous bit with his brother Arbaaz in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was very funny too.

I agree with you that Sohail is a good comedian, but he is also liked in action roles in the interior of the India and in Punjab. Salman Khan is enjoying his star status and his hits of the past and of course some in the recent past. He is still a bankable star and the last movie of his I really enjoyed was Maine pyaar kyon kiya. Typical role, but still funny. And aaya, I salute your interest in bollywood. Didn't you like Jaan-E-Mann Sandeep?  MPKK was so much fun, never mind it was a silly adaptation for Cactus Flower (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064117/) and that Katrina Kaif was so horrible in it. But Sushmita Sen was so hot and her dance under rain was just mind-blowing.

By The way, I don't consider No Entry a Salman Khan film, his was more of supporting role and he was nowhere to be found large chunk of the film. I see the film more the Anil Kapoor/Lara Dutta show, they were the scene stealers.

I remember watching Jaan-E-Mann, but dont have any memory of it now... but yes Sushmita' memory from MPKK remains with me even now, and i liked the music of MPKK. Lara was awesome in No Entry, one of her best... Anil was good too... but yeah, it wasnt a Salman movie but he was decent in it...

London Dreams: Finally, a poster. This movie has taken so long on production and post, I was wondering if it would even release this year. Salman Khan suddenly has too many mnovies coming out within the next few months - Wanted, London Dreams, Mr aur Mrs Khanna and Veer.

The Great Indian Butterfly: I like Aamir Bashir. And Sanjay Gupta's production means atleast good production values. Let's see how this turns out.

London Dreams: Finally, a poster. This movie has taken so long on production and post, I was wondering if it would even release this year. Salman Khan suddenly has too many mnovies coming out within the next few months - Wanted, London Dreams, Mr aur Mrs Khanna and Veer.

Shariq, for someone who is so cynical in many occasions, it is strange that you haven't given up on Salman by now, I find it curious.

Yes, although I'm not a fan of everything Farhan Akhtar is associated with, I do admire what he's doing. It is also a lot better than what the RGV and KJo camps have been turning out. But there's a very westernized-slant to his ideas/stories/concepts. This makes the movies sit well mostly only with those that identify with or are exposed to western cultures.

It makes sense. Although I noticed that Bollywood films are notorious for billing the bigger-name star first even if they play a cameo in a film. Female stars also are always billed after their male co-stars.

Yeah but I think it is a part of Don's shtick. I mean the line in the stadium when someone calls him sir, and he replies with something like"You call a decent person sir, call me Don". He really knows the kind of role he is playing here; a mustache twirling cartoon villain but without the mustache.

Hitman rip-off?

Not every Bollywood movie is a rip-off, you know.

this is directed by S Raghavan, the man behind ek Haseena Thi and Johnny Gaddar - hence this comes with a lot of expectations from fanboys (like me!).

Synopsis - It started with a simple idea. Anurag Kashyap, Sudhir Mishra and Chakri Toleti will choose 12 directors from across India to make 10 minute short films. Each film will be part of a larger story. Not a collection of short stories but an integral part of a larger story. The main plot was written by Anurag Kashyap. Then the madness started. The 12 directors were chosen from 600 entries. They were given the plot and they came back with their section. Set in 12 different cities.

I don't think I'm gonna bother watching the trailer, after the reaction from family/friends and online.

Bombay Talkies looks interesting though Zoya's segment looks the weakest and Karan Johar's the strongest.

Btw, I got around to watching Bombay Talkies. And the actual quality was the opposite of what the trailer suggested. Zoya's was the best short (I thought), while Karan's was the weakest. Anurag and Dibaker's were good too. The strength of each director was visible when seen this bunch of shorts in one sitting.

The original with Rajesh Khanna and Nanda is a classic, one of the best suspense movies Bollywood has had.
In fact, the original was the alter-ego Yash Chopra film. He's made some fantastic thrillers (Kaala Patthar, Waqt), besides the glossy star romantic dramas.

The remake seems to have taken the basic premise, but is doing its own Roshomon thing to that singular narrative of the original.

The original was produced by BR Chopra, way before Yash Chopra had his own production/studio. so BR Chopra holds the rights to the movie. In fact, BR Chopra was a big fan of the genre. He was also producer for Waqt, and himself directed the awesome Dhund
